Day 146 (Tuesday) Huw had gone when I got up and it’s really weird without him. I had to get an earlier train this morning as my student wants to change the time slightly and as I was a bot early I used a map and found the place for my interview this afternoon, which wasn’t too far from International House. The class went well and time flies with this student. I had a quick chat with Annick over a quick sandwich and we tried to make a plan to catch up this week. The interview took half an hour and I think went well and I believe I answered all the questions but hey, who knows? It’s for a part time business English job, which I did in Madrid, it wasn’t my favourite job by any stretch of the imagination– but a job is a job. Helene and I arranged to meet this afternoon so I called her from Nice station to give my ETA and when I was walking into the old town she came to meet me. We went to the lovely cafĂ© on the seafront because it was still in
Day 145 (Monday) Back to International House today, but as a teacher (albeit unpaid for the moment) not as a student. The sun was shining and it was nice to walk to the station again other than for sightseeing. It was also nice to see William and Pascal and I saw Annick for about 20 seconds. William introduced me to my new student Sohrab who is from Iran. William then took me into his office to fill me in on some details about Sohrab and to remind me that he’s doing me a big favour by letting me work to pay off ‘my debt!’ I then told him that the auto entrepreneur is very difficult asking if there’s anybody in the office who can help. He asked his daughter first who actually said hello to me for the first time ever; she agreed that it is very complicated. So then William talked to another woman in the office and I understood 90% of the conversation. I even answered one of her questions directly and she is going to help me next Wednesday. I have n
Day 144 (Sunday) The clocks went back today – I can’t believe we are going to lose the sun off our terrace at 3pm now – that’s just horrible but I guess I should be satisfied that we still have proper sun and it’s almost November. We both had a nice lazy day today, well Huw did – I had to catch up on this blog because I hadn’t written for four days. We did lose the sun at 3pm and it’s a bit cooler today but we still sat in the sun for four hours so I really mustn’t complain. I had a call this morning from Helene (Chadwick’s wife) inviting us to the bar lunchtime. I turned her down this time, as we wanted a day off so I’ve made arrangements to meet her on Wednesday after school. Then I realised that Wednesday is a bank holiday so I won’t be in school but I can meet her anyway. It’s 6pm and it’s getting dark but the light show every evening before it gets dark is stunning. It was the same tonight as it was last night so that is something to l

Day 143 (Saturday) After a nice little lie in we decided to go to Cannes for the afternoon so, for the first time since June, we didn’t go to the Saturday market to buy poulet roti! I hope the lovely man forgives us. We saw Andy outside the bar on our way to the station and he told us to go to le Suquet when we got there because this is the prettiest part of Cannes and is the old town. The train journey was fine, until two minutes before we were due to get off when it stopped for over ten minutes and we have no idea why. Anyway it was a lovely sunny day again and we walked down to the seafront and were reminded once again just how ugly the film festival hall is.  How the hell did they get permission to build this eyesore on the seafront? I remember when I worked the festival many years ago, my friend Amanda had a part-time job in Monaco radio and she got to meet and interview Clint Eastwood and George Clooney (the most handsom
