Day 3380 (Thursday) 10th September 2026

This is Menton

and this is Villefranche under a cloud.

It was another hot humid day and it was overcast pretty much all day, which is a shame for the passengers on these two cruise ships.

Huw had to go to Ken’s again this morning, the pool was still green yesterday but good news it’s blue again today so all the treatments he has been giving it has worked. Many people with pools in the area have the same problem after a storm dumped Saharan dust into the water making algae grow when the hot sun returned.

Before

After

At lunch time we went up to the Corne d’Or for some lunch, the view wasn't as spectacular as usual because of the clouds but it is still very special.

One of the cruise ships was a lot smaller than usual so I looked it up when we got home and it's pretty exclusive. There were no prices on the website - you had to call them to find out how much it's going to cost, so I imagine it'll be very expensive.

This story has been in all the news…

Investigation after female staff at Eiffel Tower replaced by men for religious visit.

An investigation has been launched in France after female staff at the Eiffel Tower were replaced by male colleagues for the visit of a Hindu religious group.

A delegation of around 100 people linked to the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) group visited the iconic landmark in Paris on Saturday.

"Women were asked to leave their places of work" and felt "humiliated", staff union representative Diane Davoine said. The tower closed on Monday as staff went on strike to show their outrage.

BAPS - a movement whose beliefs originate in the 18th Century - strictly separates men and women, including in temple activities and building entrances.

Ariel Weil, who is the president of the company that runs the Eiffel Tower, blamed its managers for being "a bit overzealous" in complying with the request without considering whether it was "inappropriate".

Weil, who is also mayor of Paris Centre, told French broadcaster Franceinfo on Tuesday that the incident was "totally shocking and unacceptable".

An internal investigation will determine who was responsible for putting the conditions in place, Weil said, and ensure it "never happens again".

In a statement reported by AFP news agency, staff at the monument said that during Saturday's visit, female employees were also "instructed not to go through or cross certain areas while the delegation was present".

"Tensions mounted over the weekend, so [on Monday morning], the employees decided to meet: first, to open a dialogue with management, and second, to ensure that women are never treated this way at the company again," Davoine said.

Société d'Exploitation de la tour Eiffel (SETE), which runs the Eiffel Tower, had previously said the conditions imposed on female staff were not in line with its values "nor with the principles of equality between men and women".

A man wearing a backpack is out of focus in the foreground of the picture, which shows the entrance to the Eiffel Tower and a sign showing that it is closed.

A sign said the opening of the tower was delayed for "operational reasons" on Monday

BAPS consecrated its first major temple in France on Sunday, in a Parisian suburb.

In a statement on X, BAPS said the trip was "arranged in conjunction with the Eiffel Tower team at the start of normal opening hours to avoid disrupting or inconveniencing others".

It apologised "for any pain or inconvenience caused", adding "we believe in the universal values of mutual respect and service".

On its website, the group describes itself as a "spiritual, volunteer-driven fellowship dedicated to improving society" through Hindu values.

It has temples in major cities around the world, including London, Los Angeles and Sydney.

It draws its beliefs from the teachings of Lord Swaminarayan, a late 18th-Century celibate ascetic who is regarded by his followers as an incarnation of Vishnu, the revered Hindu god of preservation.

BAPS says the segregation of men and women was introduced for the benefit of women, but critics say 18th-Century beliefs have no place in today's world, and keeping women out in the name of religious practices is discriminatory.

Politicians in France have condemned Saturday's incident.

Yaël Braun-Pivet, the president of France's National Assembly, said: "I refuse to allow women to be compelled to step aside in order to meet the demands of foreign visitors."

French hard-right leader Marine Le Pen said: "In France, we will never accept that the presence of women be 'limited'."

Former centre-right French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, who has said he will run for the presidency next year, said: "In France, no culture, no belief, no worship, nothing nor anyone can come to dictate to women their place.”
