From domestic and international politics to the start of the Paralympic Games and teachers heading back to school, here's what is happening in France this week.
Monday
Politics – President Emmanuel Macron is due to receive leaders of the far-right Rassemblement National party Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella at the Elysée Palace as part of the consultations to decide the country’s next Prime Minister. According to the Elysée, the new head of France’s government will be named after these meetings, perhaps as early as Tuesday.
Wednesday
Paralympic Games – The opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées and Place de la Concorde kicks off the second sporting festival of the summer. The ceremony begins at 8pm and will be screened on France 2 TV, while the Games will run until September 8th.
Thursday
Diplomacy – President Emmanuel Macron arrives in Serbia for a two-day visit.
Rugby season – In case the Olympics and Paralympics aren’t enough for you, the second-tier ProD2 season kicks off. The first match is between two sides with promotion ambitions, Brive and Oyonnax.
Football – Sorry, more sport. France’s national football coach Didier Deschamps is set to unveil his squad for the first two matches of the Uefa Nations League, against Italy on September 6th, and Belgium on September 9th.
Friday
Travel warning – The final weekend of the summer holiday season starts early, with roads watchdog Bison Futé predicting one final weekend of traffic jams and hold-ups, starting on Friday. Issues are also expected in parts of the country on Saturday and Sunday.
Schools – Children don’t return to classes until Monday, September 2nd, but teachers up and down the country head into schools for a planning and training day ahead of the new school year.
