Huw has ordered a new battery for Kisbee and this afternoon he went down to kick start it to keep it going. A group of tourists off the ship started talking to him and he gave them the speel and then a second group stopped him. They thought they were in Nice so he put them right and also told the story of why Rue du Poilu is so called.
Poilu translates as ‘hairy’. French soldiers of WW1 were famous for being unshaved therefore earning the nickname “Les Poilus or the hairy ones”. Rue du Poilu was named after these soldiers who walked down here from Villefranche Garrison to the train station on their way to the battlefields of northern France.
As I was looking for this I stumbled upon some reviews on TripAdviser about Le Phare and it included a photo of us on a Friday night.
Great little bar in centre of Villefranche. We watched football FA CUP Final, on 2 TV's, great atmosphere. Pool table. Reasonable priced drinks. Food on menu earlier, but did not try it. Seb, behind bar great with info about area and were to go etc. Pity did not have longer, would have spent more time there.
THE place to be ! So friendly from Seb the owner to all the locals who enjoy the atmosphere here. Don't worry if you're traveling solo you're sure of a warm welcome. Extremely reasonably priced. Does amazing pizza baguette or hotdogs for a quick snack.
This was Badger last night sitting on my pillow waiting for me to go to bed.
